Health Help: Acne

Acne occurs most often in adolescents, but may affect persons of any age. It is a skin condition which affects the pores, leading to clogged pores known as blackheads or whiteheads, pustules commonly referred to as pimples and deeper infected lumps called nodules. It causes redness and blotchiness of the skin and may result in scarring.

It’s commonly believed that acne is caused by poor hygiene and dirty skin. This is not true. The most common factor in developing acne is the hormone testosterone. While testosterone is usually discussed in context with male health, both men’s and women’s bodies produce testosterone, in varying amounts. Increased testosterone production stimulates the skin to enlarge pores and increases the oil produced by the sebaceous glands. This leads to the collective symptoms referred to as acne.

While hygiene and diet are not the direct causes of acne, those who suffer from it may be able to avoid worsening it by being aware of their cleansing routines, and whether or not any particular foods they consume seem to affect the condition. Mild, non-irritating cleansers are best on skin which has acne or similar symptoms. Women who have developed acne may be tempted to cover up blemishes or uneven complexion with make-up, but this is unwise. Cosmetics may make symptoms worse.

Those who wish to overcome their acne should visit a dermatologist to discuss treatments and medication.
